In 1967 the Republic of Biafra declared itself independent. By 1970 an estimated one to three million people, most of them children, had died, the great majority from starvation under a blockade the world watched and did nothing about. Nigeria declared there was no victor and no vanquished. Then it asked us to forget.
Biafra Rising is the book my mother, Blessing Ngozi Obi, and I wrote together so that our own family would not forget. It walks from the war and the famine to the years of silence, then to the new movement: Radio Biafra, the young people who carry flags and get shot for it, the activists held for years without conviction, and the double standard of a state that pays off armed insurgents while it jails peaceful separatists.
It takes a side. It also lays out the law, the timeline from 1967 to 2025, and what a peaceful path to self-determination could look like.
